186,000 MILES PER SECOND features the expressionistic photography-based work of Tom & Lois White, cofounders and resident artists at Exhibit No. 9 gallery + studio for contemporary art.
In 186,000 MILES PER SECOND, they introduce their series ROADWAY/CONVERSATIONS. The name refers to the speed at which light - the subject - travels. This particular body of work dissects, expands and recasts the hidden vibrant under-layers of the utilitarian light sources we encounter and ignore when traveling at night. The multiple exposure process reveals a painterly essence transforming the light elements into abstract images reminiscent of brush strokes, spray paint, ink drawings and graffiti.
Tom & Lois White’s work explores the vagaries of light through the use of multiple exposure, color, black and white, and positive/negative. The resulting works challenge the viewer’s perception of the image’s subject matter and medium.
Complemented by an experimental process in everything from intent, to shooting, to editing, to the printmaking process, their approach is purely aesthetic using the photographic process as a jumping off point. They weave stories behind veils of abstract or representational images and leave the viewer to discover what’s behind them. They aim to find that edge where light meets dark, where odd meets familiar, where life is lived in an ambiguous and indefinable world.
